a Sweet and Happy Year!
In a few days it is Rosh Hashana, "the head of the year", also known as the Feast of Trumpets, and most of Israel is getting ready wondering where the festivities will take place, at who's home, what food to prepare and will there be enough food, buying presents for everyone etc etc.
The dates of these holidays shift from year to year as they are marked according to the Hebrew (lunar) calendar. Rosh Hashana is early this year starting Wednesday September 8 at sunset according to the "biblical day". It is a 2-day holiday barely a week after school started and is immediately followed by the shabbat-weekend... Not a bad way to start a new year is it?
The traditions at Rosh Hashana are many. They vary with each family but two that I think are shared by all are:
1- dipping slices of apples in honey, signifying hopes and wishes for a sweet and fruitful year to come and
2- eating a "new fruit" – meaning, a fruit that has recently come into season. A pomegranate is often used as this new fruit.
This year is the year 5711.
